Meet Team Rallyhood: Graphic Designer Ivan Arango

Meet the man who helps bring Rallyhood to life before our very eyes: Ivan Arango. Ivan is part of the Koombea Team in Barranquilla, Colombia who helped turn the dream of Rallyhood into a reality. He’s the lead designer for Rallyhood, so if you’re looking at something on the site, chances are he’s the one who created it. We got Ivan to take a little time out of his busy day to answer a few questions to let our users see a little bit more behind-the-scenes here at Team Rallyhood.

Q: What’s a typical day at work like for you?

A: My day at work starts with a Project Status Meeting or Daily Scrum, which is a daily status system that we use here at Koombea to organize our daily tasks. I do all the planning for my daily design tasks and always drop a couple of jokes with the team. Then I go to my desk, plug in my headphones, and let my imagination do the rest. I must say that I’m part of a very cool and professional team, and working with them makes me feel like I’m not actually working at all. Instead, I’m just having fun doing what I like the most: designing.

Q. How long have you been with Rallyhood? What has it been like to see it grow and evolve?

A. One day awhile back, I was assigned to design a mockup for the To-Do feature in a Rally-Site. Patti approved my designs and it was amazing to hear her reaction. From that moment on, it’s been a year and a half working on this amazing site. And we’ve definitely created a design bond where we grow and evolve together, which is why I am passionate about Rallyhood and put my heart into all my work.

Q. What inspired you to become a designer? Was there a “big moment” for you, or was it something you always knew you wanted to do?

A. I always wanted to be a designer, but I didn’t really get clear about that until later – I actually graduated with a degree in Social Communications and Journalism. A teacher noticed my interest in design when she caught me drawing anime and comic characters in her class. Instead of reporting me, she offered me an opportunity to work for the design team at the University’s TV channel. Little by little, I started to venture into Graphic Design and discovered that it was fun and it came easily to me. And then one day the most beautiful thing happened…..I realized that my hobby had become my job! And here I am today.

Q. What’s your favorite thing you’ve designed for Rallyhood?

A. That’s a hard question, because I really enjoy designing each piece of Rallyhood. If I had to choose one, I’d say the To-Do List feature because that was the one that brought me onto the team with Rallyhood.

Q. What “Rallies” you? Is there some cause, person or goal in your life that motivates you?

A. [Rallyhood Founder] Patti Rogers. She envisioned this beautiful cause and had a goal that I’m happy to follow. I haven’t met her in person, because of the distance. But it’s easy to tell her heart, her will and her strong passion goes into Rallyhood and I can sense that in all of our interactions. I feel like I’m contributing to a project that is good for people…and that feeling is priceless.

Q. What are your top 3 favorite songs at the moment?

A. ~ Amber - 311 (this song is so relaxing).

~ Something About Us - Daft Punk (best love story ever).

~ Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn & John (whistle).

Q. If you could be an animal, what would you be? Why?

A. I would be a wolf, because they are mystical wild animals. For me, they evoke wisdom, loyalty and unity within their group. They are survivors that maintain a strong connection to nature and in particular, night. I’m a nature lover, and I feel very comfortable working all night long when needed. In fact, I definitely feel more productive working at night, just like wolves.
